Sanity has broken out in Formula One with the immediate sanction of two three-day tests to cure the tyre crisis that has blighted the season. But the shift in attitude has come too late to have any impact on Sunday’s German Grand Prix. Tyre manufacturer Pirelli will appear before the sport’s governing body, the FIA, in Paris tomorrow to explain the carnage at Silverstone that ended with six catastrophic failures and prompted the threat of a boycott by the drivers at the Nurburgring. While the FIA await Pirelli’s short-term solution to avert a repeat of Sunday’s drama, the sport moved to repeal the ban on testing that has hampered progress all year.
